Just as every remodeling project is unique, so is the cost associated with each one.
According to HomeAdvisor, the average kitchen remodel costs $25,093, or about $150 per square foot. The typical price range falls between $13,095 and $37,115, with most homeowners spending anywhere from $75 to $250 per square foot. The total expense depends on various factors such as the size of the kitchen and the quality of materials used.
For instance, a smaller project costing between $10,000 and $15,000 might include painting walls, refacing cabinets, upgrading the sink, and installing a tile backsplash. On the other hand, a renovation exceeding $30,000 could feature custom cabinets, hardwood floors, granite countertops, and high-end appliances.
Remodeling Magazine provides different estimates for kitchen remodel costs in 2020:
- Basic Kitchen Remodel: $23,452
- Mid-Level Kitchen Remodel: $68,490
- High-End Kitchen Remodel: $135,547
The National Kitchen and Bath Association offers another perspective, recommending that homeowners budget 15% to 20% of their home's value for a kitchen remodel. This translates to:
- For a home valued at $200,000, a kitchen remodel budget of $30,000 to $40,000.
- For a home valued at $400,000, a kitchen remodel budget of $60,000 to $80,000.
Fixr.com suggests considering these five questions before starting your remodel:
- How much can I afford to spend?
- What do I want in a kitchen?
- How do I plan to use the kitchen (cooking, entertaining, studying, working, etc.)?
- How long can I go without a kitchen during the remodel?
- Will I be selling the home in the near future?
“Once your budget has been determined, cut it by at least 25%. Set the extra money aside as a cushion to make unexpected surprises much less stressful,” recommends RemodelingCosts.org.
Bankrate suggests setting aside a smaller amount (about 10%) to cover construction overages and other unforeseen expenses.
Regardless of your allocation for surprise costs, Bankrate.com advises pricing out every component of your kitchen remodel, including materials and labor. Typically, cabinetry and hardware represent about 29% of the total cost of a kitchen remodel.
“Cabinets are the workhorse of the kitchen,” says Tennille Wood, CEO and principal designer at Beautiful Habitat in Denver, as quoted by NerdWallet. “The entire floor plan and function of the kitchen is built on them.”
Cabinetry plays a significant role in how your kitchen looks and functions. That's why we love helping homeowners design a perfect solution for their kitchen or bath.
